Parenting Across the Autism Spectrum : Unexpected Lessons We Have Learned

Description

Maureen F. Morrell and Ann Palmer are raising two very different children: Justin, a whirlwind of activity and mood swings, who is supervised in a residential farm community, and Eric, quiet and passive, who lives independently at college. The authors give an account of the striking similarities as well as the stark differences in their experiences of parenting children at opposite extremes of the autism spectrum. The two mothers speak openly about their children's diagnosis and early childhood through to adolescence, young adulthood and the day they leave home. They give a moving account of the challenges they faced and the surprising consolations they found along their sons' very different paths in life. Through their friendship and two decades of shared experiences of parenting an ASD child, each has gained a clear understanding of her own strengths and limitations, as well as those of her child. Parenting Across the Autism Spectrum offers a personal perspective and practical guidance for parents at the start of their journey with autism, especially those whose children are newly diagnosed. It also provides useful insights for professionals working with individuals across the autism spectrum and their families. The book was elected the 2007 Autism Society of America's Outstanding Literary Work of the Year.

Up, Down, All-Around Stitch Dictionary: More Than 150 Stitch Patterns to Knit Top Down, Bottom Up, Back and Forth, and in the Round

Description

Recognising a hole in the market, popular knitwear designer and top-down knitting guru Wendy Bernard seized the opportunity to create a stitch dictionary that presents popular stitch patterns worked in all possible directions. In the Up, Down, All-Around Stitch Dictionary, Wendy presents the patterns in four different ways: knit flat from the bottom up (the classic style), knit in the round from the bottom up, knit flat from the top down and knit in the round from the top down. Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman pdf

Mary Wollstonecraft,William S. Godwin: Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman

Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman

Description

In her classic manifesto "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, "pioneer feminist Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) embraced an egalitarian social philosophy as the basis for the creation and preservation of equal rights and opportunities for women. In the posthumously published "Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman, " Wollstonecraft drew upon similar reasoning, presented in a fictional framework to illustrate the grim reality of a woman's life in the eighteenth century. Inspired by the writings of Rousseau and William Godwin, her husband and editor, Wollstonecraft was determined to depict "the misery and oppression, particular to women, that arise out of the partial laws and customs of society." The tale of a woman locked up in an asylum by her abusive husband, "Maria" dramatizes the effects of the era's draconian English marriage laws. Combining the spirited rhetoric of a philosophical treatise with a narrative as gripping as any gothic fiction, this is the book that laid the groundwork for modern feminism.

Colouring Birds

Description

A delightful coloring-in book for adults, featuring beautiful natural history illustrations as color reference. Includes garden favorites, such as wrens and woodpeckers, to more rarely glimpsed birds like owls and the jewel-like kingfisher.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come. 'the ideal reading...for the hours after midnight' Thus Henry James described the style of supernatural tale of which Sheridan Le Fanu was a master. Known in nineteenth-century Dublin as 'The Invisible Prince' because of his reclusive and nocturnal habits, Le Fanu was fascinated by the occult. His writings draw on the Gothic tradition, Colouring Birds free epub elements of Irish folklore, and even on the social and political anxieties of his Anglo-Irish contemporaries. In exploring sometimes inexplicable terrors, the tales focus on the unease of the haunted men and women who encounter the supernatural, rather than on the origin or purpose of the visitant. This makes for spine-chilling reading. The five stories presented here have been collected by Dr Hesselius, a 'metaphysical' doctor, the forerunner of the modern psychiatrist, who is willing to consider the ghosts both as real and as hallucinatory obsessions. The reader's doubtful anxiety mimics that of the protagonist, and each story thus creates that atmosphere of mystery which is the supernatural experience. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe.

Mr. Andrew Lambirth: Primary English Reflective Reader

Primary English Reflective Reader

Description

This Reflective Reader contains extracts from books, journals and current research that have been chosen to stimulate trainee teachers' thinking about teaching English. It sets challenges about the daily work of teaching children to become literate, and creates a framework within which teachers will learn to become reflective practitioners.

Since its first appearance in 1991, The European Reformation has offered a clear, integrated, and coherent analysis and explanation of how Christianity in Western and Central Europe from Iceland to Hungary, from the Baltic to the Pyrenees splintered into separate Protestant and Catholic identities and movements. Catholic Christianity at the end of the Middle Ages was not at all a uniformly 'decadent' or corrupt institution: it showed clear signs of cultural vigour and inventiveness. However, it was vulnerable to a particular kind of criticism, if ever its claims to mediate the grace of God to believers were challenged. Martin Luther proposed a radically new insight into how God forgives human sin. In this new theological vision, rituals did not 'purify' people; priests did not Quicksand free epub need to be set apart from the ordinary community; the church needed no longer to be an international body. For a critical 'Reformation moment', this idea caught fire in the spiritual, political, and community life of much of Europe. Lay people seized hold of the instruments of spiritual authority, and transformed religion into something simpler, more local, more rooted in their own community.

Quicksand

Description

A daring, brilliant work by one of our most original and fearless novelists. 'Why should I let you write about me?' 'Because you'll inspire people. To count their blessings.' Aldo Benjamin, relentlessly unlucky in every aspect of life, has always faced the future with despair and optimism in equal measure. His latest misfortune, however, may finally be his undoing. There's still hope, but not for Aldo. His mate Liam hasn't been faring much better - a failed writer with a rocky marriage and a dangerous job he never wanted - until he finds inspiration in Aldo's exponential disasters. What begins as an attempt to document these improbable but inevitable experiences spirals into a profound exploration of fate, fear and friendship. Anarchically funny and wildly entertaining, Quicksand is a subversive portrait of 21st-century society in all its hypocrisy and absurdity, an exquisite interpretation of suffering and resilience, and a powerful story about taking risks and finding inspiration.

Aristotle,J.H. Freese: Rhetoric

Rhetoric

Description

Aristotle, great Greek philosopher, researcher, reasoner, and writer, born at Stagirus in 384 BCE, was the son of Nicomachus, a physician, and Phaestis. He studied under Plato at Athens and taught there (367 47); subsequently he spent three years at the court of a former pupil, Hermeias, in Asia Minor and at this time married Pythias, one of Hermeias s relations. After some time at Mitylene, in 343 2 he was appointed by King Philip of Macedon to be tutor of his teen-aged son Alexander. After Philip s death in 336, Aristotle became head of his own school (of Peripatetics ), the Lyceum at Athens. Because of anti-Macedonian feeling there after Alexander s death in 323, he withdrew to Chalcis in Euboea, where he died in 322. Nearly all the works Aristotle prepared for publication are lost; the priceless ones extant are lecture-materials, notes, and memoranda (some are spurious). They can be categorized as follows: I. Practical: "Nicomachean Ethics"; "Great Ethics" ("Magna Moralia"); "Eudemian Ethics"; "Politics"; "Oeconomica" (on the good of the family); "Virtues and Vices." II. Logical: "Categories"; "On Interpretation"; "Analytics" ("Prior" and "Posterior"); "On Sophistical Refutations"; "Topica." III. Physical: Twenty-six works (some suspect) including astronomy, generation and destruction, the senses, memory, sleep, dreams, life, facts about animals, etc. IV. "Metaphysics" on being as being. V. On Art: "Art of Rhetoric" and "Poetics." VI. Other works including the "Athenian Constitution"; more works also of doubtful authorship. VII. Fragments of various works such as dialogues on philosophy and literature; and of treatises on rhetoric, politics and metaphysics. The Loeb Classical Library(r) edition of Aristotle is in twenty-three volumes.

Explore the world of Everlost in Neal Shusterman s acclaimed Skinjacker trilogy, now available in one boxed set. The year is 1291, and Walter is the twelve-year-old son of William Tell, the greatest bowman in the land of Uri. Walter lives happily in the remote heights of the Alpine Mountains, caring for his family s goat herd and practicing his marksmanship in the hopes of making his father proud. But as the end of the year approaches, Rhetoric free epub Walter s peaceful life is shaken as his country enters a revolution, and Walter must carry a secret that could threaten the life of the father he loves so dearly. It was an obsession that would destroy them all... In 1942, two nations switch sides--and World War II takes a horrifying new course. Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor? Prominent U.S. Senator James Wyckoff hires former government agents-turned-private security consultants Janson and Kincaid to locate his teenage son Gregory. Gregory's girlfriend Lynell has been found strangled in a Seoul hotel, and Gregory has fled the city to avoid being arrested for the crime. But Senator Wyckoff insists that his son is innocent, suggesting that Lynell, who was a translator, may have been murdered because of something she overheard at a recent international conference. And when Janson and Kincaid realize they're being hunted by an assassin, they suspect that this crime--and the cover-up--were orchestrated by a shadowy unit of the U.S. State Department as part of a larger plot to provoke violence between North and South Korea.

Michael E. Porter,Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg: Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results

Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results

Description

The U.S. health care system is in crisis. At stake are the quality of care for millions of Americans and the financial well-being of individuals and employers squeezed by skyrocketing premiums--not to mention the stability of state and federal government budgets. In Redefining Health Care, internationally renowned strategy expert Michael Porter and innovation expert Elizabeth Teisberg reveal the underlying--and largely overlooked--causes of the problem, and provide a powerful prescription for change. The authors argue that competition currently takes place at the wrong level--among health plans, networks, and hospitals--rather than where it matters most, in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of specific health conditions. Participants in the system accumulate bargaining power and shift costs in a zero-sum competition, rather than creating value for patients. Based on an exhaustive study of the U.S. health care system, Redefining Health Care lays out a breakthrough framework for redefining the way competition in health care delivery takes place--and unleashing stunning improvements in quality and efficiency. With specific recommendations for hospitals, doctors, health plans, employers, and policy makers, this book shows how to move health care toward positive-sum competition that delivers lasting benefits for all.

Vampire of the Mind

Description

A special solo adventure for Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, in the second of three stories dealing with the Doctor's latest battle with arch enemy the Master. Somewhere off the South Coast of England, there's a lonely island. On that island stands a solitary castle, long since abandoned - haunted, they say. But the truth is, that castle houses something far worse than mere ghosts. The castle is what lies at the end of a trail followed by the Doctor in search of several missing scientists - all of them connected to the top secret Dominus Institute and its elusive CEO, Sir Andrew Gobernar...But the Doctor will soon discover that he's the one being haunted, by a ghost from his past...or perhaps, his future. Big Finish's main range of Doctor Who stories began in 1999, and has featured television Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann across its 212 tales. Writer Justin Richards has worked in a variety of roles connected with Doctor Who, including a number of novels for the BBC. He's also the writer and creator of The Invisible Detective series of books. Star Colin Baker recorded this just as the 2015 I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here candidates were announced - a series close to his heart after a popular appearance in 2012. Alex Macqueen first appeared as the Master in Big Finish's Doctor Who spin-off UNIT: Dominion, going on to confront the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) in the hugely successful Doctor Who - Dark Eyes series. CAST: Colin Baker (The Doctor), Alex Macqueen (The Master), John Standing (Professor Threadstone), Kate Kennedy (Heather Threadstone), Neil Edmond (Boatman/Guard), Catriona Knox (Landlady), Elliot Levey (Gobernar).
